George Michael, Cultural Icon, Dies at 53

George Michael, born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotoua, passed away at the young age of 53 in his home in North London on Christmas Day. His band Wham!’s “Last Christmas” (1984) and supergroup Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” (1984), both featuring George’s stellar vocals, were naturally on loop all weekend given that they’re two of my favorite Christmas songs, and the irony of it all should be noted.

George Michael was a cultural icon in every sense of the term – a successful pop star, the ultimate fixture in the world of fashion (just look at his supermodel-clad video for “Freedom! 90”, one of the most famous music videos ever made), a sexual icon and barrier-breaker.
